Generic vs Brand Names
“ACETAMINOPHEN” is the generic name of the drug.
“TYLENOL” and “TEMPRA” are two brand name versions of ibuprofen.
They are all the same medication – just different names.
Tylenol is Different from Anti-Inflammatories
Tylenol is a PAIN-RELIEVER medication. It can also be used to treat FEVER.
Tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin).
Tylenol is different. So you can take Tylenol in addition to anti-inflammatory medications.
Tylenol is generally safe for most people to take as long as you do not have liver problems or combine it with a lot of alcohol intake.
Dosing – For Adults
Tylenol usually comes in a 325mg tablet (Regular Strength), or a 500mg tablet (Extra Strength), or sometimes even a 650mg tablet. You can also find equivalent non-brandname versions of acetaminophen that are usually less expensive.
Adults can take up to 1000mg of Tylenol every 6 hours, as needed:
- i.e. take TWO extra strength 500mg tablets every 6 hours.
- or, THREE regular strength 325mg tablets every 6 hours.
Alternatively, you may wish to take 650mg every 4 hours, as needed:
- i.e. take TWO regular strength 325mg tablets every 4 hours.
One final option using the special 650mg long-acting tablets:
- take TWO of the 650mg long-acting tablets every 8 hours.
